The Israeli military said on Tuesday it had killed a senior commander from the Islamist militant group Hamas in the Gaza Strip.

The military said the commander of the Hamas brigade in Rafah, Nael Abu Obeid, was responsible for planning attacks on Israeli soldiers and civilians.

Defence Minister Israel Katz wrote on X that the Shin Bet domestic intelligence agency was involved in the operation alongside the military.

Israeli news portal Ynet reported that Abu Obeid was killed in a drone strike on Tuesday afternoon.

Meanwhile, the Palestinian news agency WAFA reported Israeli airstrikes killed two Palestinians, including a child, and injured more than 10 others in the Al-Mawasi area of southern Gaza.

It is unclear whether the al-Mawasi attack is related to the Israeli military report. Neither report could be independently verified.

While a ceasefire has been in place in the Gaza war since October 2025, deadly incidents and attacks continue to occur. Israel recently intensified its airstrikes, saying that it was specifically targeting senior Hamas members.
