The excesses associated with the wedding of Kansas City Chiefs tight end Travis Kelce to pop superstar Taylor Swift have been both noteworthy and stupefying, but Mike Florio of Pro Football Talk provided an interesting final footnote as the presumably happy couple rode off to their destination honeymoon sunset.

The impetus was provide by Drew Lerner of Awful Announcing, who noted that both FOX and Amazon had what he called “a very strong presence” at the ceremony. As Florio put it, “even rules analyst Dean Blandino [was] on the guest list. And while there also was a solid presence from ESPN (Jason Kelce’s current employer), no one seemed to be present from CBS or NBC.”

Cue the announcing rumor mill/merry-go-round. According to Florio, “there were rumors in media circles last year that Travis was interested in Kirk Herbstreit’s seat in the Thursday Night Football booth. (Neither Herbstreit nor his dog were among the Amazon personnel spotted at the event.) With Herbstreit’s deal running through 2026, Travis (who already has a relationship with Amazon through the New Heights podcast) could be in line to take the spot.”

This would open the door for Kelce to land on Fox NFL Sunday when the next spot opens up, and given the way the Kelce/Swift story has spiced up ratings in recent NFL broadcasts, something like this does feel more than a little inevitable.

A lot of this depends on what kind of workload wants to take on when he retires, which will presumably happen after this season after he does his last hurrah with the Chiefs. As Florio noted, this kind of media play would be much easier than Herbstreit’s current triple duty of ESPN College GameDay, the top ESPN/ABC college football game, and Thursday Night Football.

Florio also put a speculative price on the move. His number was $40 million a year, which is reasonable given what the likes of Pat McAfee are currently making. It’s not exactly a highbrow gig, so it defintely comes with a low bar when it comes to competence and “reporting” skills.

The wild card in all of this is the New Heights podcast that Kelce occasionally does with his brother Jason, who was an offensive lineman with the Philadelphia Eagles. Travis Kelce could also try to make any new deal a family affair, and it’s not hard to imagine the networks buying in given the superstar talent the Chiefs tight end could draw for ongoing appearances.
