If the Los Angeles Lakers are tackling the offseason with a win-now mindset, one recent trade proposal would land the Lakers one of the best defenders in the NBA.

NBA reporter Evan Sidery suggested the Lakers trade Dalton Knecht, Jake LaRavia, the No. 25 overall pick in the 2026 NBA Draft and a 2031 first-round pick to the New Orleans Pelicans. In exchange, the Lakers would receive forward Herb Jones and center Yves Missi.

Lakers Have Been Expected to Trade Knecht

Knecht has been a big name in Lakers’ trade rumors for the past few months. Los Angeles traded him to the Charlotte Hornets in February but the deal was rescinded after center Mark Williams reportedly failed his physical examination.

Lakers insider Anthony F. Irwin reported that Knecht asked the Lakers to trade him, and the franchise is expected to follow through on that request.

Meanwhile, LaRavia is entering the final season of his two-year, $12 million contract with the Lakers. The 24-year-old averaged 8.2 points, 4.0 rebounds and 1.8 assists while shooting 45.9 percent from the field across 82 games last season.

Jones Is One of the NBA’s Best Defenders

The Lakers would benefit from adding a strong defender like Jones to the team. Jones an NBA All-Defensive First Team selection in 2024 and has finished high up in the voting for NBA Defensive Player of the Year in multiple seasons.

Jones finished fifth in DPOY voting during the 2023-24 season and earned two second-place votes that season. For his performance during the 2025-26 season, Jones tied for 10th in voting for the award.

Jones averaged 8.9 points, 3.4 rebounds, 2.8 assists, and 1.6 steals in 56 games with the Pelicans this season. The 27-year-old is entering the final year of a four-year, $53 million contract with the Pelicans but he also signed a three-year, $67 million extension that spans through the 2029-30 season.

The other piece of the trade package is Missi, who was the No. 21 overall pick in the 2024 NBA Draft out of Baylor. The 6-foot-11 center would add some size to the Lakers’ frontcourt next season.
