LEXINGTON, Ky. (FOX 56) —The Lexington Sporting Club women’s side defeated Carolina Ascent FC, 3-1, to secure the Gainbridge Super League Final for the first time in club history.

“I mean, I can’t ask anymore. The girls, they put everything into it,” LSC Head Coach Kosuke Kimura said. “We knew we were going to get it done, it was just a matter of how.”

Carolina would snatch the game’s first goal in stoppage time in the first half with one swing of Mia Corbin’s left foot from outside the box.

Lexington would eventually find the equalizer in the 72nd minute thanks to forwards Catherine Berry and McKenzie Weinert. The league’s leading scorer turned provider by putting the ball on a plate for Weinert, who made no mistake in front of goal.

The two teams couldn’t be separated after 90 minutes, but in extra time, the Gals in Green took their game to another level. Six minutes after the restart, defender Regan Steigleder climbed the highest on a corner kick and redirected the ball into the bottom corner. Then in the 104th minute, midfielder Addie McCain bundled the ball into the back of the net to extend the home team’s lead and complete the comeback.

“Never stop, that’s the mentality that we’ve been teaching them,” Kimura said. “In extra time, they were tired, but the mentality. Elite winner mentality, that got us through, got us a total of three goals, and we won.”

A sellout crowd at Lexington SC Stadium erupted at the final whistle as LSC completed not only a worst-to-first turnaround in just two seasons but also etched itself into the record books as league champions for the first time in club history.
