MAGA loses its shit over hijab-wearing Miss Wayne County

Ameera Hashwi rode through Dearborn’s Memorial Day Parade on Monday in a red convertible, smiling, waving to the crowd, and holding an American flag.

For most normal people, this was a harmless and ordinary civic moment, with Miss Wayne County taking part in one of Michigan’s oldest Memorial Day traditions.

For a certain corner of the MAGA movement, it was apparently the fall of Western civilization.

Hashwi, a 25-year-old Lebanese American attorney from Dearborn Heights, was crowned Miss Wayne County on Aug. 10, 2025, becoming the first titleholder in the program’s history to wear a hijab. She is the 34th Miss Wayne County, and she’s preparing to compete for Miss Michigan 2026 from June 18-20 at Frauenthal Center in Muskegon.

But the outrage machine didn’t really get revved up until Sunday, when the far-right X account End Wokeness posted video of Hashwi riding in Dearborn’s 100th Memorial Day Parade, wearing her tiara over her hijab as she waved an American flag. By Monday afternoon, the End Wokeness post had drawn more than 1.3 million views, 2,300 retweets, and 3,900 comments. Libs of TikTok, another influential right-wing X account, also posted the video, drawing more than 615,000 views, 1,300 retweets, and 2,200 comments.

Combined, the two posts racked up more than 1.9 million views, 3,600 retweets, and 6,100 comments in less than a day, turning a local parade appearance into the latest national freakout over Muslims simply existing in public life.

The responses were as offensive, hyperbolic, and paranoid as you’d expect.

“This is an invasion,” one commenter wrote.

“Islam is conquering America,” another declared.

“Michigan your state has been taken over,” another warned, falsely and absurdly claiming there are “millions of Muslims” who have “taken over Wayne County.” (For reference, Wayne County’s entire population was estimated at about 1.77 million in 2025, according to the U.S. Census Bureau, and available estimates put the Muslim population in the tens of thousands.)

Another commenter wrote, “Gross..LOOKS like Ms. Afghanistan.. we celebrate Memorial Day in bathing suits showing our skin..BECAUSE THIS IS AMERICA.”

That is a real argument being made by people who believe they are defending patriotism. Memorial Day, a solemn holiday to honor Americans who died in military service, is apparently best observed by demanding more skin from a beauty queen and less diversity.

Others went even further, calling Hashwi’s hijab a symbol of “territorial conquest,” accusing Islam of “eroding America’s foundations,” and suggesting Muslims should be banned or removed from the country.

This is not a political disagreement. It is bigotry.

And it is especially deranged because Hashwi was not protesting America. She was not denouncing the flag. She was not rejecting civic life. She was participating in it, in public, in a patriotic parade, in the city where she belongs.

Dearborn’s 100th Memorial Day Parade honored fallen service members with a military funeral procession, parade, and remembrance ceremony. The city says the parade draws thousands of spectators and includes veterans groups, marching bands, and community partners.

Hashwi’s presence in that parade should have been unremarkable in the best possible way. Instead, it led to a MAGA meltdown from people who look at a Muslim woman waving an American flag and somehow see an invasion.

The hypocrisy is hard to miss. MAGA conservatives constantly demand that Muslims “assimilate,” then lose their minds when a Muslim woman does exactly what they claim to want: She entered public life, took part in a patriotic parade, served her community, and waved an American flag.

One commenter captured the hypocrisy perfectly: “If this young woman truly loves our country, then what is the issue other than her religion?”

Exactly.

The issue is not the flag. It is not the pageant. It is not Memorial Day.

The issue is that Hashwi is visibly Muslim, visibly Arab American, and visibly unbothered.

That alone was enough to send the internet’s fear merchants into a spiral.

Hashwi’s actual record is not exactly the stuff of civilization-ending panic. She is a Wayne State University law graduate and practicing attorney. Her public service initiative, Step Up and Serve, promotes fitness, wellness, and community engagement. She has read books to children, spoken to students about leadership, helped organize a 5K that raised more than $10,000 for Dream of Detroit, and hosted a community wellness event in Dearborn with free health screenings, mental health resources, fitness demonstrations, nutrition guidance, and medication advice from a pharmacist.

In other words, she is doing the kind of civic work conservatives usually claim to admire, until the person doing it is Muslim.

Hashwi told the Detroit Free Press after her win that the support she received from across the country had been “amazing.” She said people from different states, including titleholders and their families, reached out to say how meaningful her victory was. She also said her faith is a major part of who she is and that wearing a hijab made her feel ready for a new stage of adulthood.

“Miss America really focuses on your intellect,” Hashwi told the Free Press. “It focuses on your community service, your passion and your drive. At the end of the day, those factors are what makes somebody a winner.”

That quote should terrify no one. But to the people screaming “Dearbornistan” online, even intellect, service, passion, and drive become suspicious when the woman embodying those values is visibly Muslim.

The backlash against Hashwi is not happening in a vacuum. Dearborn and its Arab and Muslim communities have become recurring targets for right-wing influencers, white nationalists, and anti-Muslim provocateurs who treat the city like a content farm for bigotry. Right-wing influencers and white nationalists have descended on Dearborn to stage anti-Islam provocations, including Quran desecration attempts and racist rhetoric.

In November, right-wing provocateur and Jan. 6 defendant Jake Lang showed up in Dearborn wearing a bulletproof vest, carrying a Quran he threatened to burn, and shoving bacon into people’s faces. He mocked Arabic, called Muslims “violent, disgusting people,” used the n-word, made monkey noises at teenagers, and then tried to portray himself as the victim when people reacted.

It was not a protest. It was a performance. And like the meltdown over Hashwi, it relied on the same tired lie that Muslims in Dearborn are not neighbors, residents, voters, workers, lawyers, students, business owners, veterans, and family members, but some foreign force “taking over” America.

The facts do not matter to these people because facts are not the point. The point is fear and clicks. The point is convincing a national audience that a hijab in a parade is an emergency.

But the image that set them off tells a different story.

A Muslim woman in a tiara waved an American flag in Dearborn, a city that has helped define immigrant life, labor, faith, and community in metro Detroit for generations. She smiled while representing Wayne County. A crowd cheered. And young Muslim girls saw someone who looked like them smiling in a patriotic parade.

That is not an invasion.

That is America.

And if that makes the bigots lose their shit, that says more about them than it ever could about Ameera Hashwi.
