Manchester United’s search for a long-term left-back continues to gather pace, with several young defenders remaining on the club’s shortlist as they plan further additions following their midfield business.

Newcastle United, meanwhile, are facing renewed speculation surrounding another key member of Eddie Howe’s squad after already losing Anthony Gordon and Sandro Tonali this summer, while Bruno Guimaraes continues to be linked with Arsenal.

According to TEAMtalk, Manchester United remain determined to sign Lewis Hall and are convinced the England international is open to a move to Old Trafford before the transfer window closes, following a worrying trend developing in Tyneside.

The report states Hall is Michael Carrick’s preferred option at left-back after United also tracked Nathaniel Brown, who has since joined Bayern Munich, and continue to monitor Barcelona defender Alejandro Balde.

“Manchester United remain firmly focused on signing Newcastle United defender Lewis Hall this summer, with TEAMtalk understanding the England international is still Michael Carrick’s first-choice option to strengthen the left side of his defence, and with the player’s verdict on ditching St James’ Park for Old Trafford coming to light,” the report says. “Sources indicate the 21-year-old sees the opportunity to work under Carrick and establish himself at United as hugely attractive.

“Hall is understood to be comfortable arriving initially to compete with Luke Shaw before eventually succeeding the England international as the club’s long-term first-choice left-back.”

The report makes clear that Newcastle will block any attempt from Man Utd to sign the 21-year-old, particularly after already completing the sales of two members of the Xi in Gordon and Tonali, with Guimaraes also widely linked with an exit.

While Hall remains the Red Devils’ priority, the report noted the club is assessing other defensive options that might turn into more feasible operations, giving Newcastle a bit of relief amid endless rumors linking their players with moves elsewhere.
