Mexico coach Javier Aguirre announced he's stepping down from his position after a dramatic 3-2 defeat to 10-man England in the last 16 of the World Cup on Sunday.

The decision, which has been planned beforehand, ends his third tenure for the national team.

"I'm saying goodbye to football. Goodbye to the Azteca Stadium. I'm leaving with pride," he said.

Aguirre first took over the national team in 2001 and stayed for only one year. His second term was from April 2009 to the end of June 2010. His third term began in summer of 2024.

Rafael Marquéz will take the job after being part of the coaching staff for two years.

"I told him he can always count on me," Aguirre said.
