Monday Musings: Stocking up for 2027

Happy Monday, y’all. Hope your weeks have gotten off to a good start.

It’s Fourth of July week, and…….well…..we’re in the dead period. All college sports are done. It’s going to be slow on the actual sports happenings for a bit. But not here. Season preview content is coming soon, and recruiting never stops.

So, let’s get to.

1) I don’t usually start off with Miami Hurricanes baseball stuff, but something happened this week that caught my eye.

With Daniel Cuvet off to the professional ranks, there was a roster hole for J.D. Arteaga to fill. And fill it he did, securing the commitment of LSU infielder Trent Caraway.

Now, Caraway might not be a name that resonates based on his sole season last year with a very forgettable Tigers team. But he had an impressive 2025 season with Oregon State to help the Beavers reach Omaha. He batted .267 with an .820 OPS, 12 home runs, and 47 RBIs as the Beavers’ third baseman.

We’ll see how Miami goes at third base, but having someone with CWS like that is an addition I am happy to see.

2) Arteaga also landed a handful of arms, something this team clearly needs.

Blake Morningstar (Wake Forest), Chase Swift (Virginia Tech), Dylan Mulcahy (SFA), Mason Horwat (Penn State), and Skyler Hutto (Jacksonville State) are all coming to Coral Gables.

Morningstar had an off year last year statistically, but he was excellent in 2025, earning first team All-ACC honors with a 6-2 record and a 3.87 ERA.

Hutto has back-end-of-the-bullpen potential after a truly memorable 2026 season for the Gamecocks. He went 6-4 with a 2.20 ERA in 41 innings pitched. Batters posted a .164 average against him for the season. Yo.

There’s certainly some promise in this group, but we won’t star to know if the pitching is finally better until February. Still, again, reason for optimism.

3) Mario Cristobal’s 2027 class is flat-out kick ass, but he made some moves towards 2028 and 2029 recently.

He snagged the pledges of a pair of Carrollton, GA teammates in 2029 QB CJ Cypher and 2028 OT Kweli Fielder last week.

Fielder checks in as the Rivals industry rated No. 43 overall player, No. 5 offensive tackle, and No. 7 player in the state of Georgia for 2028. Cypher isn’t rated yet, being a part of the 2029 class at the moment, but the ceiling is very, very high with him.

A tremendous way to wrap up what’s been a terrific couple of months for Mario and company on the trail.
