An odd ending to the J Batt era at Michigan State has officially came to an end.

Michigan State announced its new interim athletic director on Friday, with Jon Palumbo stepping in to replace Batt in the interim period. As part of that announcement, the Spartans made it known that Batt has "transitioned away from operational duties" and will officially be done on July 27 -- one day before he begins his new position as athletic director at Kentucky.

While technically Batt will still be employed by Michigan State for the next two-plus weeks, the Spartans made it known that he will use vacation time until his final day at the university. Effectively meaning Batt is now done at Michigan State.

The news of Batt departing Michigan State for Kentucky came out in mid-June, but there was then a delay in Batt actually leaving the Spartans. That delay many believed was due to the buyout of his contract, which was a hot topic in recent weeks. When Batt initially signed a contract to leave Michigan State for Kentucky, the buyout was expected to be reduced to $2.5 million from $5 million since Michigan State president Kevin Guskiewicz was set to take a new role at Clemson. That was officially going to occur later this summer, which made some thing that Batt was essentially waiting it out at Michigan State to reduce that buyout.

Ultimately, Guskiewicz announced this week that he would be staying at Michigan State and that must have changed something because Batt is now officially done with the Spartans. The buyout was still reduced, with Kentucky set to pay Michigan State $3.95 million instead of the full $5 million.

Batt's time at Michigan State was short, with him only being the Spartans' athletic director for one year. But it surely was eventful in that lone year, with the ending of that tenure included in that statement.
