As we're just days away from rookies and veterans reporting for training camp, the New England Patriots have decided to resign defensive tackle Isaiah Iton.

Iton originally signed with the Tennessee Titans back in 2024 as a rookie free agent out of Rutgers. He played on the practice squad and never saw a snap in a game that season. The following offseason, he signed with the New England Patriots but spent the entire season on injured reserve.

The 24-year-old showed promise last season, but the hip injury he sustained set him back in showing those talents during the 2025 campaign.

Iton was not tendered a contract by the Patriots this offseason, so he hit the free agent market, but with this signing, he will not get a shot at a roster spot on the Patriots in the coming weeks. Iton joins a defensive tackle room that has names like Milton Williams and Christian Barmore at the forefront of it. Other names include Cory Durden, Jeremiah Pharms Jr., Leonard Taylor III, Joshua Farmer, Eric Gregory and David Blay Jr.

So what could this signing really mean in the big picture of things ahead of training camp?

When the Patriots announced that they parted ways with DT Travis Shaw last Friday, it left many wondering what that move was for. Maybe it was for bringing back a familiar face. Still, the competition in the room will be stiff.

Names like Williams, Barmore, and potentially Durden seem like a lock for the 2026 season. Iton now finds himself in a situation where he has to rise above the pack. Prior to his injury, Iton played well as a run defender despite his size not being the biggest. At 6 foot 3, 300 pounds, many feel he could factor into a first or second down DT if need be.

There is also a financial situation that plays a factor in Iton's return to the team. There is no cap impact here with bringing him back. Iton signed a deal that most likely looked similar to the ERFA tender; he probably could have gotten ahead of his one year with a non-guaranteed base salary of $885,000.

This means that Iton does not qualify for the Top 51 status. Therefore, he will only become a cap hit if he makes the 53-man roster or even the practice squad. This leaves the Patriots with their $34.2 million in cap space unchanged.

Iton becomes one of many in the hunt for a team to play for this season as training camp kicks off later this week.
