Liverpool have officially completed another transfer, but it’s very much one with an eye towards the future as 17-year-old attacking midfielder Samuel Martinez has officially agreed a deal that will see him join up with the club next summer when he turns 18 next summer.

In the meantime, the Colombian youth international will continue to play for Atletico Nacional in Medellin where he developed in the academy, breaking into the first team last season before representing a victorious Colombia at the U17 Copa America over the summer.

While details of the deal have not been officially confirmed, widespread reports have Liverpool paying a £750k fee to Atletico Nacional, and the player travelled to England over the weekend to undergo a medical at the club and put pen to paper on a five-year contract.

However, the contract won’t kick in until next summer, with FIFA mandating only players over the age of 18 can complete international transfers—though youth transfers between clubs within the United Kingdom are allowed, as pre-contract agreements such as this.
