Manny Machado just went on a rant about analytics amid a brutal season so far for the San Diego Padres star.
AdvertisementAdvertisementAdvertisementThis isn't analytics in a complicated sense, though. Seven years, times $39 million per year, is $273 million. That's how much the Padres still owe Machado beginning with the 2027 MLB season.
And holy cow, that's looking like it could be miserable.
Machado is currently hitting below the Mendoza Line, with an OPS that begins with a '5.'

Machado turns 34 years old in July.
His contract runs through his age-40 season.
And at this rate, he's going to be unplayable sooner rather than later.
AdvertisementAdvertisementAdvertisementSure, there's a world where Machado rediscovers some of his ability, at least for a few seasons.
But is there any universe where the last couple seasons of this contract aren't massively painful? It's really hard to see one.
When Machado signed the deal, the hope always would've been that he delivered in a huge way during the first half of it. But he's not even at the halfway park, and he's fallen off a cliff.
At this point, the Padres have to just be hoping and praying that this gets better. Because, believe it or not, it can still get much, much worse.
