Penn State football may be quickly approaching, but the planning for the upcoming men's basketball season in Happy Valley is also chugging along in the dog days of summer. The Nittany Lions will once again be looking to develop some team chemistry and make a push for some postseason basketball with a reworked roster, and they will get a chance to see how it all comes together with a preseason matchup against a team from the Atlantic-10.

Penn State men's basketball will face St. Bonaventure in a preseason exhibition matchup in the KeyBank Center in Buffalo, the St. Bonaventure athletics department announced on Monday. The game is scheduled for Saturday, October 17. The exhibition will be the second half of a doubleheader, with the first game being a matchup between Daemen and St. John Fisher, A Division 2 and Division 3 school from New York, respectively.

"We're extremely excited to return to Buffalo and KeyBank Center to host Penn State in the inaugural Greenlight Preseason Showcase," Vice President and Director of Athletics Bob Beretta said.

St. Bonaventure is coming off a 17-17 season in 2025-26. The Bonnies missed out on postseason play last season and have not been in the NCAA tournament since 2021. Penn State is coming off a disappointing 12-20 season and was last in the NCAA tournament in 2023.

Of course, KeyBank Center is the home of the NHL's Buffalo Sabres, which are owned by massive Penn State donor Terry Pegula. Pegula has invested significantly in the Penn State athletics department and hockey program, which led to the hockey arena bearing his name. So it makes sense that Penn State would round out this otherwise all-New York doubleheader.
