Penn State fills basketball staff vacancy with in-house promotion
While the Penn State basketball squad has experienced a lot of sea change over the years, a promotion from within could help maintain the coaching staff that Mike Rhoades has been trying to build.
After former assistant coach Jamal Brunt left for Syracuse, the Nittany Lions announced Brent Scott would be appointed to the role. They hope that this move, along with Scott's experience, will help the new-look squad.
AdvertisementAdvertisementAdvertisementA former basketball player, Scott has had much experience with Rhoades in their time with VCU, as well as Scott's alma mater, Rice. He became respected in those circles as someone who was seen as an elite recruiter. Perhaps it was his role in being involved in this year's recruiting cycle that earned him the role. With this international class, however, it will be a challenge to continue this momentum.
Another important thing of note is his ability to develop the Nittany Lions' young centers in the squad, including their most recent draft selection in Yanic Kona Niederhauser. Niederhauser was German, so that could help in the learning curve for Scott as more international flair is added to the squad. Look for the likes of new signees Tim Oboh and Aleksandar Zecevic to contribute right away for the Nittany Lions.
