Polish fighter jets intercepted a Russian Ilyushin Il-20 reconnaissance aircraft close to Poland's Baltic coast, the military said on Tuesday.

"This is Russia's first attempt in a long time to approach our coast in order to scout out air defence," Defence Minister Władysław Kosiniak-Kamysz said in Warsaw.

Russia was testing NATO, he said, according to Poland's PAP news agency.

The Russian aircraft flew over international waters about 30 kilometres off the port city of Ustka in Pomerania.

After a warning, the Il-20 turned away and flew back towards Russia.

During an interception, pilots established visual contact with the opposing crew and signalled that their aircraft should move away.

Tensions in the Baltic region are high as a result of Moscow's war against Ukraine, which borders both NATO members and Russia.
