Predicting Aidan Hutchinson’s Sack Total for the 2026 Season

One of the biggest questions surrounding the Detroit Lions entering the 2026 season is just how dominant Aidan Hutchinson can be. After establishing himself as one of the NFL’s premier edge rushers over the past few seasons, could this finally be the year he challenges for the league lead in sacks?

I believe the answer is yes.

Hutchinson is coming off another outstanding season, earning second-team All-Pro honors while setting a new career high with 14.5 sacks. He has improved every year since entering the league, and there are several reasons to believe another jump is coming in 2026.

One of the biggest factors is continuity on the coaching staff. Defensive coordinator Kelvin Sheppard enters his second season leading Detroit’s defense, and while he won’t magically add sacks to Hutchinson’s stat line, a more experienced and cohesive defensive unit should create more opportunities, for Hutchinson. Defenses typically improve as players become more comfortable within a scheme, and that could have a ripple effect on Hutchinson’s production.

It’s also worth remembering just how dominant Hutchinson looked before his injury in 2024. Through the first five games of that season, he had already piled up 7.5 sacks and was on pace for an astonishing 25.5 sacks. That pace would have put him in position to challenge the NFL’s single-season sack record before a broken leg ended cut his season short. While expecting anyone to maintain that pace over 17 games is unrealistic, it showed the type of ceiling Hutchinson possesses when he’s healthy.

The advanced numbers further reinforce just how disruptive he has become. According to Pro Football Focus, Hutchinson earned a 91.8 overall defensive grade in 2025, ranking fourth among 115 qualified edge defenders. His 92.1 pass-rush grade ranked third at the position, while his 70.6 run-defense grade ranked 26th.

Beyond the sack totals, Hutchinson consistently affected opposing quarterbacks. He generated 100 total pressures, including 16 sacks, 64 quarterback hurries and 20 quarterback hits. Against the run, he added 29 solo tackles and forced four fumbles, proving he impacts games in multiple ways even when he isn’t finishing plays with sacks.

Detroit’s supporting cast could also help Hutchinson produce even bigger numbers. If the Lions’ secondary takes another step forward and forces quarterbacks to hold onto the football a little longer, Hutchinson and the rest of the pass rush will have additional time to get home. The Lions have also continued to invest in their defensive front, making it more difficult for opposing offenses to double team Hutchinson on every snap.

The schedule may also work in Detroit’s favor. While there are no easy wins in today’s NFL, the Lions face several quarterbacks who are either inexperienced or have struggled with pocket awareness throughout their careers. Those matchups could provide Hutchinson with opportunities to stack multiple-sack performances over the course of the season.

Health will ultimately be the biggest factor. If Hutchinson can stay on the field for all 17 games, there’s little reason to believe he can’t put together the best season of his career.

My prediction is that Hutchinson sets a new personal best with 18 sacks. It may not threaten the NFL record, but it would firmly place him among the league’s elite pass rushers and give him a legitimate chance to compete for Defensive Player of the Year honors.
