‘Priceless stupidity’: Supreme Court ruling on Transgender athletes sparks reactions
On Tuesday, the United States Supreme Court upheld two state laws preventing the participation of female transgender athletes on girls’ and women’s sports teams. The ruling centered on laws adopted by Idaho and West Virginia, but figures to have major implications for 25 other states with comparable restrictive measures for transgender athletes, according to the NY Times.
The state bans, which impact school and collegiate athletes nationwide, have received the support of the Trump administration. Last year, the President ordered federal agencies to withdraw funding from schools that allowed transgender athletes to participate in girls’ and women’s sports.
“No student-athlete on either side of the issue, whether a biological female or transgender, deserves to be ostracized or vilified,” wrote Justice Kavanaugh, a longtime girls’ basketball coach, while writing that states “may maintain women’s and girls’ sports for biological females” for the majority opinion.

People on social media also had their fair share of reactions to Tuesday’s ruling.
“Can’t believe we needed the Supreme Court to tells us this. What a bunch of idiots we have in Sports that allowed this to happen in the first place. Priceless Stupidity,” one person posted on X.
“I think this broadly reflects where the nation is on this issue,” someone else added.

But when the number of trans girls playing girls’ high school sports goes from a handful to zero, who will Republicans scapegoat then?” another person posted.
While it remains strange that Republicans devoted so many resources toward an issue affecting so few people, it’s nice to have the framework to provide athletes clarity on which states will allow them to compete with their peers.
