ST. PETERSBURG, Fla. (AP) — Drew Rasmussen allowed one hit through seven innings, Cedric Mullins drove in the only run of the game on a bunt single and the Tampa Bay Rays finished off a three-game sweep of the Cleveland Guardians with a 1-0 victory on Sunday.

Rasmussen (9-5) allowed a leadoff double to Steven Kwan to start the game before retiring 21 of the final 23 batters he faced, including the last 12. Rasmussen struck out nine and walked one.

Tampa Bay blanked its opponent for the eighth time this season, earning its second 1-0 win against Cleveland in 2026. The other was on April 28.

The game finished in 1 hour, 58 minutes, the fourth game in the majors this season to be completed in under two hours.

Parker Messick (8-6) allowed six hits and struck out six, allowing one run in 7 2/3 innings for Cleveland, which has lost five consecutive games. The Guardians were limited to three runs total in the series as Tampa Bay finished the series with back-to-back shutouts. Garrett Cleavinger pitched a scoreless eighth before Bryan Baker converted his 17th consecutive save and 28th overall after striking out Brayan Rocchio with the tying run on first to end the game.

The AL East-leading Rays improved to 38-15 at home this season.

WASHINGTON (AP) — CJ Abrams and James Wood both homered twice and drove in three runs as Washington beat Arizona to take two of three games in its weekend series.

Dylan Crews and Abrams each had three of Washington’s 15 hits. The surprising Nationals (54-52) moved within a game of Arizona for the final National League playoff spot in a crowded wild-card race.

The 25-year-old Abrams leads the majors with 82 RBIs. He has 27 home runs this season, breaking the franchise record for shortstops set by Ian Desmond with 25 in 2012.

Wood leads the team with 30 homers, including a two-run shot that tied the score at 4 in the fifth inning. Three batters later, Abrams connected for a two-run drive off Jonathan Loáisiga (2-3) that put Washington ahead for good.

Riley Cornelio (2-1) gave up one run in two innings for the win. Clayton Beeter got three outs for his 10th save.

PIRATES 8, CUBS 7

PITTSBURGH (AP) — Ryan O’Hearn hit a grand slam on his 33rd birthday, and Pittsburgh held off Chicago to avoid being swept in the three-game series.

The Cubs nearly erased a six-run deficit. Seiya Suzuki hit a two-run home run with one out in the ninth inning to make it a one-run game, but Mason Montgomery held on for his second save.

O’Hearn’s blast to center field in the third inning extended the Pirates’ lead to 7-1. That came an inning after a pair of rookies homered, with Esmerlyn Valdez hitting a leadoff shot and Shawn Ross hitting a two-run blast for his first career home run.

It was the fourth career grand slam for O’Hearn and second this season. His 17 home runs match the nine-year veteran’s career high.

Valdez has 14 home runs in just 37 games. Ross, a catcher, was making his first career start after being called up from Triple-A Indianapolis on Friday.

BOSTON (AP) — Jarren Duran drove in two runs with one of his three singles, Jahmai Jones had a pinch-hit two-run double and Boston beat Toronto.

Ceddanne Rafaela added an RBI single for the Red Sox, who closed a 10-game homestand 8-2, including a victory on Wednesday that matched a club-record 15-game winning streak from 1946 before it was stopped in the nightcap of a split doubleheader.

The fading Blue Jays couldn’t build on Dylan Cease’s dominating one-hit complete game from Saturday and have lost seven of 10 since the All-Star break.

Coming off the injured list after missing three weeks with a strained left groin, Ranger Suárez went four scoreless innings, striking out six and allowing four hits.

Greg Weissert (3-2) worked a scoreless inning and was credited with the win.

BALTIMORE (AP) — Matt Olson caught Gunnar Henderson’s line drive and stepped on first for an improbable double play in the bottom of the 10th, and Austin Riley’s RBI double an inning later lifted Atlanta to a victory over Baltimore.

Every game in this series was decided by a run, with the Braves winning Friday and Sunday in extra innings and the Orioles managing a walk-off victory Saturday. The finale went to extra innings thanks largely to an error by Atlanta second baseman Ozzie Albies, but Baltimore loaded the bases in the 10th with the score 2-all and couldn’t win it.

Henderson has had a nightmare of a 2026 season, playing poorly while also having bad luck at times. He hammered a line drive right at first base, where Olson could catch it and step on the bag almost in one motion as runner Pete Alonso frantically tried to dive back.

Replays showed the play was extremely close, but the double play stood. Then Taylor Ward — who left the winning run at third in the ninth inning in Friday’s loss — popped out.

ROYALS 5, TIGERS 4

DETROIT (AP) — Michael Massey hit a go-ahead, two-run homer with two outs in the eighth inning and Kansas City held on to beat Detroit.

The Royals led 3-0 through four innings, fell behind after giving up four runs in the fifth before going back ahead on Massey’s blast to right.

Nate Pearson (2-0) threw a scoreless inning. Steven Cruz pitched the ninth for his second save after giving up a walk and hit to the first two batters, closing the game by striking out Riley Greene.

Drew Sommers (0-1) allowed two runs on two hits over 1 1/3 innings.

Dillon Dingler hit a go-ahead, two-run single in a four-run fifth inning for the Tigers, but they failed to maintain the lead and lost a second straight game to the last-place team in the AL Central.

The Tigers have a week to decide whether to keep ace Tarik Skubal or to trade him ahead of the Aug. 3 trade deadline.

NEW YORK (AP) — Tyrone Taylor put the Mets ahead with a three-run homer in the sixth inning, Marcus Semien added a three-run drive in the seventh and New York beat Los Angeles to prevent a season sweep.

With the Dodgers leading 3-1, reliever Jack Dreyer walked rookie Carson Benge and pinch-hitter Luis Robert Jr. in the sixth. Taylor gave the Mets a 4-3 lead by hitting a 1-1 sinker from Evan Phillips (0-2) into the left-field seats.

It was Taylor’s fifth homer in 18 games since returning from the injured list on June 28. Eligible for free agency after this season, the backup outfielder appears likely to get traded before the Aug. 3. deadline.

Freddy Peralta allowed three runs — two earned — and six hits over four innings in what could end up being his final start for New York. Peralta also can become a free agent following the World Series and is expected to get moved sometime within the next eight days as part of a significant selloff by the last-place Mets (44-62).

PADRES 5, MARLINS 3

MIAMI (AP) — Manny Machado and Jackson Merrill homered in the eighth inning and San Diego overcame an early three-run deficit to beat Miami, extending the Marlins’ losing streak to a franchise-record 12.

Machado also doubled in a run, while Luis Rengifo doubled and singled and Ty France had two singles for the Padres.

The Marlins previously lost 11 straight in June 2011 and on two separate stretches in 1998. Miami has not won since an 8-4 victory over Seattle on June 9.

Down 3-1, the Padres scored four times against reliever Lake Bachar (1-2) in the eighth. Machado hit a tying two-run drive before Merrill’s solo shot put San Diego ahead. Rengifo doubled and scored on Luis Campusano’s single.

Jeers from the crowd of 21,675 were noticeable after the third out that ended the eighth. Miami has not won since a victory over Seattle on July 9.

TWINS 11, ATHLETICS 8

MINNEAPOLIS (AP) — Ryan Jeffers went 3 for 5 with three RBIs, Connor Prielipp threw 5 2/3 innings of one-run ball in his return from the injured list and Minnesota beat the Athletics in the rubber match of a three-game series.

Kody Clemens was 3 for 5 with two triples and an RBI, and Ryan Kreidler doubled three times and drove in a run for the Twins.

Prielipp (3-5), who had been sidelined by a blister on his middle finger, allowed two hits and one walk while striking out five.

Nick Kurtz hit a three-run homer for the Athletics in the sixth. Jeff McNeil and Carlos Cortes each drove in two runs.

CHICAGO (AP) — Munetaka Murakami homered twice and drove in a season-high six runs; Miguel Vargas, Chase Meidroth and Junior Perez also went deep as Chicago beat Houston to avoid a series sweep.

With his parents in attendance and on his bobblehead giveaway day, Murakami hit a 385-foot, two-run homer in the bottom of the first that gave Chicago its first lead of the game. It was his first homer since May 27th. He added a go-ahead, RBI groundout in the third inning and a two-run single in the seventh. He closed out his three-hit game with his 22nd homer of the season — a solo shot — to right-center in the eighth.

Vargas hit his 22nd homer of the season in the sixth — a go-ahead, two-run shot to put the White Sox back on top 5-3. Meidroth followed in the seventh with a solo shot to break the game open. Perez hit his third homer of the season 376 feet to left in the eighth.

Andrew Benintendi had an RBI single in the seventh for a 9-3 lead.

MILWAUKEE (AP) — Jacob Misiorowski struck out 12 of the first 13 batters he faced — including each of the first seven — and allowed only one hit over five innings and the Milwaukee trounced Colorado.

Misiorowski (11-4) set a Brewers franchise record for consecutive strikeouts to start a game. Sixty-six of his 83 pitches exceeded 100 mph, as Misiorowski broke his own major league record for most 100-mph pitches in a game since pitch tracking began in 2008.

Colorado didn’t get a runner on base against Misiorowski until Cole Carrigg hit a two-out, opposite-field homer in the fifth on a 101.9-mph fastball. It was the fastest pitch that has ever resulted in a Rockies homer during the pitch tracking era.

Misiorowski increased his MLB-leading strikeout total to 185. He allowed one run over five innings as his ERA rose slightly to an MLB-best 1.58.

Andrew Vaughn homered for the NL Central-leading Brewers.

REDS 5, CARDINALS 3, 10 INNINGS

ST. LOUIS (AP) — Sal Stewart drove in the go-ahead run with a pinch-hit single in the 10th inning, and Cincinnati beat St. Louis.

The victory capped a 6-3 road trip for Cincinnati coming out of the All-Star break. Since the break, the Reds, in last place in the NL Central, have won two of three against Colorado, Seattle and St. Louis.

Stewart’s line drive to right field against Matt Svanson (2-3) scored automatic runner Tyler Stephenson and pushed Cincinnati to its third straight road series win for the first time since 2023.

After Eugenio Suárez was intentionally walked to load the bases with two outs, Nathaniel Lowe extended the lead with a two-run single to left.

ARLINGTON, Texas (AP) — Dominic Canzone put Seattle ahead with a three-run homer two pitches before Randy Arozarena also went deep in the seventh inning, and the Mariners rallied for a victory over Texas.

Canzone, who had three hits and four RBIs, pulled his 16th home run of the season just inside the right-field foul pole off reliever Cole Winn for a 4-3 lead. The Mariners avoided a third consecutive loss in a four-game series that started as a matchup of the top two teams in the AL West.

The defending division champion Mariners stopped a four-game losing streak and won for the first time in six tries at the home of the Rangers this season. Seattle moved back in front of Houston for second place, 1 1/2 games behind Texas.

Gabe Speier (2-2) retired all four batters he faced in the sixth and seventh, and Andrés Muñoz struck out the side in the ninth for his 18th save in 23 chances.

ANGELS 4, GIANTS 3

SAN FRANCISCO (AP) — Mike Trout had his first four-hit game in more than five years, Jorge Soler and Jo Adell homered and Los Angeles beat San Francisco to snap a three-game skid and avoid a series sweep.

Angels starter Jose Soriano (9-6) allowed an unearned run in five innings. The 27-year-old right-hander gave up three hits, walked three and had five strikeouts. Mitch Farris got the final two outs for his first career save.

San Francisco, which had its four-game home win streak snapped, is the only team in MLB without a series sweep of three-plus games this season.

Trout’s first four-hit game since April 26, 2021, moved him past Tim Salmon on the Angels’ career doubles and singles lists. He went 4 for 4 with a double and three singles.

Trout’s double was his 340th, moving past Salmon for second on the franchise list behind Garrett Anderson’s 489. Trout also is now fourth on the Angels’ all-time list with 1,014 singles, trailing Anderson (1,572), Darin Erstad (1,082) and Brian Downing (1,062).

Trout’s four-hit game was the 21st of his career and raised his average to .247.

PHILADELPHIA (AP) — Bryson Stott homered, doubled and drove in five runs, NL All-Star starter Cristopher Sánchez pitched six solid innings and Philadelphia avoided a three-game sweep with a victory over New York.

Alec Bohm hit a three-run double for the Phillies, who snapped a four-game skid and finished 3-6 on their homestand against the Mets, Dodgers and Yankees.

Ben Rice homered and doubled for New York.

Sánchez (13-4) gave up three runs and six hits. He struck out six and walked three.
