BOSTON — Red Sox first baseman Triston Casas could begin swinging a bat again soon.

The 26-year-old ruptured the patellar tendon in his left knee last May 2 and missed the remainder of the 2025 season after undergoing surgery.

He began this season on the 10-day injured list and had his knee rehab interrupted in early April by an intercostal (rib muscle) strain on his left side. He suffered the setback April 6 when he experienced discomfort while trying to hit off a tee.

The Red Sox transferred Casas to the 60-day injured list on April 22.

“He is approaching, I think as we get toward the end of the week, potentially starting to do some like light swinging,” interim manager Chad Tracy said before Wednesday’s game at Fenway Park. “So like it’s progressed. Obviously the knee’s OK. We’re just still doing rotational stuff for the side and I think he’s getting closer to maybe starting some like light swinging progression.”

Casas has a career .241 batting average, .348 on-base percentage, .452 slugging percentage and .800 OPS in 251 games (952 plate appearances) in the major leagues.

This is the third straight season that he has missed time with an injury, including a rib injury in 2024 that doctors likened it to a “car crash” within his body.
