CHICAGO — When Brett Harris connected for a grand slam in the Worcester Red Sox’ doubleheader at Polar Park Wednesday, it was already a good day.

Then, shortly before 11 p.m. Wednesday night, it got better: Harris got word from Worcester interim manager Iggy Suarez that he was being called up by the Red Sox, with instructions to take the first flight out to Chicago Thursday morning.

Even better, when Harris arrived at Rate Field Thursday, he found his name on the lineup card, playing first base in the series finale against the White Sox. Willson Contreras was held out of the lineup, still bothered by a sore left foot, the result of being struck by a foul ball Wednesday night.

Harris took the roster spot made available when Ranger Suarez (groin) was placed on the IL Thursday morning, retroactive to July 6.

“It’s good to be here,” said Harris, who was acquired by the Red Sox from the Athletics last week. “It kind of happened pretty quickly.”

Harris said he was excited about the trade last week after being designated for assignment by the A’s.

“An organization like the Red Sox is a world class organization,” he said. “Any team that makes you feel wanted, you want to be here. It’s a great opportunity for me. I’m excited to be here. I was just starting to get to know the guys at Triple A and now I have to re-start the process here.”

Harris has played mostly first and third base during his career, but has played some second base, too and can fill in at shortstop “in a pinch, too. Wherever they write me in, I’ll be ready to go. You just have to be ready to go at all times.”

“He can play around a few spots and he’s a righthanded bat that’s got some thump,” said interim manager Chad Tracy. “He’s can play first base, so he gives us another option over there. We’ll get him in there today and see what we’ve got.”
