Red Wings win before fireworks light up Rochester sky

What better way to ring in Independence Day weekend than at the ballpark?

Fireworks, food specials and a postgame concert treated the 7,467 fans who packed ESL Ballpark for the Rochester Red Wings' July 3 game versus Lehigh Valley. Baseball, as one might guess, was far from the only attraction.

Culinary creations satisfied fans' appetites. Rochester Philharmonic Orchestra (RPO) treated them with a postgame show.

Pregame rain and an hour-long delay likely deterred some fans. But those who stayed enjoyed a pleasant break from the heat wave which blanketed Rochester all week.

This marked the start of a busy holiday weekend for the Red Wings, who continue their pursuit of an International League playoff berth despite a strong first-half showing.

RPO took the field shortly after the Red Wings' 11-5 win over Lehigh Valley. The crowd's majority stayed for the group's annual ballpark concert.

Fireworks followed, the first of two shows planned July 3-4. Before that, many sampled the evening's food specials created by chef Keith Hillock.

Two dinner options: Mac and cheese with burnt ends in a waffle cone bowl, and Flamin' Hot Cheeto-crusted corn on the cob.

For dessert? A "glacier," a cup of vanilla ice cream sandwiched between blue and red slushy.

A pregame rain shower delayed festivities but cooled the ballpark, affording the week's most comfortable evening to date.

Red Wings snap losing streak

Rochester lost the first three games of its week-long series with Lehigh Valley, an affiliate of the Philadelphia Phillies. A sixth-run fifth inning and a strong start from pitcher Jackson Kent helped snap the Red Wings' three-game skid.

Kent scattered five hits and two walks in five innings pitched, allowing one run while striking out four. Brady House's two-run double and Joey Wiemer's two-run single provided the significant blows in a fifth inning which saw Rochester log six hits and send 11 batters to the plate.

Lehigh Valley answered with three runs in its half of the sixth inning. Rochester's offense, however, proved too strong.

Wiemer added a two-run home run in the Rochester seventh, finishing 3-for-4 at the plate with five RBIs. The former Milwaukee Brewer also made a notable catch at the right field wall early in the game.

Yohandy Morales added three hits and two RBI for Rochester. Andrew Pinckney drove in two more runs.

Playoff chase continues

Rochester fell one game short of clinching an International League playoff spot in the season's first half, which concluded June 21.

The Wings, at 45-28, finished atop the IL East Division in the first half. Memphis, however, finished 45-26 in the West, clinching the league's automatic playoff berth for its first half champion.

Rochester must now finish atop the second half standings to seal its first playoff berth since 2013. July 3's win improved its second half record to 5-5.

Morales has paced the Wings' offense this season, batting .304 with 18 home runs and 57 RBIs in 74 games played ahead of July 3. Seaver King and Harry Ford, the Washington Nationals' sixth and seventh-ranked prospects respectively, bolster the lineup.

Rochester ranks 10th among 20 International League teams in runs scored. Its pitching staff ranks ninth in earned run average.

More festivities planned July 4

Rochester's series with Lehigh Valley continues July 4 at ESL Ballpark with a 6:45 p.m. first pitch. Gates will open at 5:15.

Another fireworks show will follow the game. Bruce the Bat Dog will be in action and, among other holiday celebrations, the Red Wings will wear 4th of July-themed jerseys.
