Zinédine Zidane's appointment as France coach is a done deal, according to transfer expert Fabrizio Romano, who said on Instagram on Tuesday that the 54-year-old has signed a contract with Les Bleus until mid-2030.

He had long been expected to succeed Didier Deschamps, who has stepped down after 14 years following the 2018 winners' fourth-place finish at the World Cup.

Top French sports newspaper L'Equipe also reported recently that the former world and European champion would take over the France team.

There has so far been no confirmation from the French Football Federation (FFF) over Zidane’s appointment.

Zidane coached Real Madrid from 2016 to 2018 and then again from 2019 to 2021, winning the Champions League three times and the Spanish league title twice.

As a player, he won the 1998 World Cup and Euro 2000 titles and won European club football’s top competition with Real in 2002.

In his last match as a professional, Zidane lost the 2006 World Cup final to Italy and was sent off after a headbutt.
