ANKARA — US Secretary of State Marco Rubio suggested Thursday that the United States will step in to solve a dispute between Ankara and Athens over a planned undersea power cable project linking Greece and Cyprus, saying Washington was “very committed” to the plan.

“We understand there are some potential impediments; there are some things standing in the way,” Rubio told Greek newspaper Kathimerini in an interview released on Thursday in an apparent reference to the dispute between Turkey and Greece over the project.

“We intend to use our diplomatic efforts to remind all parties how important this is to us and why this matters,” Rubio said.

The multibillion-dollar, 1,208-kilometer (751-mile) electricity connection project, dubbed the Great Sea Interconnector, aims to connect the power grids of Greece, Cyprus and eventually Israel.
