At least 17 people were killed and 44 injured after Russia launched an overnight missile and drone attack on Kiev and the surrounding region, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky said on Wednesday.

The city's military administration said damage was reported in at least seven districts across Kiev.

Several large fires broke out, warehouses were destroyed and a 20-storey residential building was hit, according to media reports. Warehouses were also struck in the surrounding districts of Brovary, Fastiv and Bucha, the emergency services said.

Ukraine's air force said it failed to intercept any of the ballistic or hypersonic missiles launched in the attack, renewing concerns over the country's shortage of air-defence missiles.

Russia fired 24 Iskander-M ballistic missiles and S-400 surface-to-air missiles modified for ground attack, as well as four Zircon hypersonic missiles, none of which were intercepted, the air force said. Ukraine said it shot down 98 of the 115 drones launched overnight.

Zelensky again appealed for more air-defence weapons to counter Russia's ballistic missile arsenal.

"Ballistic missile interceptors could have saved the lives of those killed today," he wrote on social media. "It is very important that our partners understand that delays in supplying them, or an unwillingness to provide anti-ballistic systems, lead directly to such horrific casualties and destruction."

The Russian Defence Ministry described the strikes as a large-scale attack using precision weapons against logistics and distribution centres for military supplies.

Russia had also attacked Kiev with ballistic missiles overnight into Saturday, killing at least nine people and injuring more than 30.
