Saudi Arabia said on Monday that it had intercepted and destroyed several drones that were reportedly targeting oil facilities in the country's Eastern Province as well as the capital Riyadh.

The attacks were carried out by "Iran-backed terrorist militias" operating from Iraqi territory, the Saudi Defence Ministry spokesman, Turki al-Maliki, said.

Al-Maliki stressed that Saudi Arabia had the right to defend itself and its facilities. The kingdom also reserved the right to respond "at the appropriate time and place."

The ministry did not initially provide details on any possible damage or casualties. No group had claimed responsibility for the reported attacks.

Saudi Arabia's Foreign Ministry condemned the incident and called on the Iraqi government to take all necessary measures to prevent Iraqi territory from being used as a launchpad for attacks.

Houthis claim previous attack on Saudi Arabia

On Saturday, Yemen's Houthi militia claimed responsibility for an attack on Saudi Arabia following Saudi strikes against its positions. Dozens of missiles and drones reportedly targeted facilities belonging to state-owned oil giant Saudi Aramco.

Saudi Arabia has previously come under repeated attack during the early stages of the conflict between Iran and Saudi Arabia, with strikes attributed to both Iran-backed groups in Iraq and Iran itself. However, there had been no recent attacks originating directly from Iran.
