Scottish Premiership: Celtic’s Yang completes fightback to see off St Mirren

• Rangers beat Motherwell 1-0 but lose Shankland to injury

• Kerjota’s late winner sees Hearts edge past Dundee

Yang Hyun-jun scored the winner as Celtic came from behind to beat an impressive St Mirren side 2-1. St Mirren were heading for the top of the Premiership when Nikolas Agrafiotis netted from the spot midway through the first half.

Liam Scales conceded the penalty with a handball but made amends when he headed home six minutes after the break. And Yang finished off a counterattack midway through the second half after good pressing from Camilo Durán.

The victory in Paisley made it five wins from five league games for the champions and inflicted St Mirren’s first Premiership defeat. Martin O’Neill’s side were made to work all the way by a Saints side who played with tempo, invention and managed 19 shots at goal.

O’Neill later lamented the unavailability of Yang for some crucial games – the 24-year-old will now fly to Japan for the Asian Games and miss the midweek trip to St Johnstone and two games against Rangers, plus the Europa League opener against Ferencvaros.

“We are going to miss him. He’s in really fine form at the moment,” the manager said. “But he’s signed off with a brilliant goal. He’s in great form and he’ll work for you going backwards. He doesn’t mind doing the hard graft.”

Rangers striker Ryan Naderi accepted a gift to score the only goal against Motherwell at Ibrox, but they fear their captain Lawrence Shankland faces a lengthy spell on the sidelines after a hamstring injury suffered early on in the game.

Naderi, who came on for Shankland in the eighth minute, dispossessed Alex Paulsen as the Motherwell goalkeeper attempted to dribble the ball past him outside his box and the German had the simple task of rolling the ball into the net to score what proved to be a 12th-minute winner.

Motherwell dominated possession and created several chances but Rangers were more effective in the final third and should have added to their lead. Kim Min-su missed a first-half penalty and the debutant striker Kevin Kelsy was among those to pass up good opportunities after he came off the bench.

Rangers ultimately saw out the game without any late scares as they recorded a third consecutive Premiership victory.

Of Shankland, the Rangers manager, Derek McInnes, said he fears the injury is similarly significant to the one that kept him out for two months early in 2026. McInnes said: “He has a similar feeling to the hamstring injury he had at Hearts last January. We don’t want to speculate too much but he says it feels similar, in the same area, so we’ll get him scanned on Monday.

“He says he felt fine going into the game and there was nothing really that he did in the game that he was aware of, he just felt it pull up. It’s a shame for the boy because he was obviously in good form, getting himself moving and enjoying some of that attacking threat we’ve had over the last few games, and we’ve waited long and hard for that.”

Michael Forbes scored an added-time equaliser for Dundee United against Falkirk, who had led at Tannadice thanks to Jacob Murrell’s fourth-minute opener, while Kilmarnock picked up their first point but are still waiting for a first Premiership win of the season after a 0-0 draw at Aberdeen. Kilmarnock’s Aaron Tshibola was sent off for a second yellow card after 83 minutes but the hosts could not find a way past the 10 men.

Sabah Kerjota scored a stoppage-time winner as Hearts staged a dramatic late fightback to defeat Dundee 2-1 at Tynecastle and make it four Premiership victories in succession.

The Jambos were frustrated for long periods after the Dark Blues took the lead in the 17th minute through Bradley Fink. But Hearts drew level in the 84th minute through a Claudio Braga penalty before Dundee had Zan Besir sent off as the match ticked into stoppage time.

Wouter Vrancken’s buoyant side made their extra man count when Albanian substitute Kerjota drilled in his first goal since arriving at Tynecastle last summer in the sixth minute of added time. The victory elevated the Jambos, unbeaten in eight in all competitions, to second in the table.

Josh Fowler’s first-half double secured St Johnstone a 2-1 win over Hibernian and moved them above their opponents in the table. Fowler netted from close range on 16 minutes, then slotted home a penalty after Nathan Lowe had levelled for Hibs to secure Saints’ second win of the campaign. The visitors were the better team in the second period but Simo Valakari’s team held on for a 2-1 success to move into seventh spot.
