Serena Williams' Wimbledon return has come to an abrupt end after she announced her withdrawal from ladies doubles competition on July 4, even before she and her sister Venus could take the court together one more time.

Williams made the announcement on her Instagram that she would not be playing doubles due to her knee injury. The Palm Beach County resident said she had four syringes worth of fluid drained from her knee and was not able to get it ready for doubles.

"Coming back to compete again has been a gift, and the opportunity to play alongside @venuswilliams once more meant the world to me," Serena said in the social media post. "I did everything I could to be ready, but unfortunately my knee just isn’t ready to compete."
