Several people buried in massive landslide in western China

Several people were buried in a massive landslide in western China on Friday, authorities said.

The landslide struck in Pengshui county, east of the city of Chongqing, in the morning, according to disaster management officials.

Chinese state television broadcast footage showing part of a hillside collapsing onto a residential road. Another video showed residents running from a cloud of dust.

It was not immediately clear how many people had been buried by the debris. Chinese state media, citing local authorities, said more than 10 homes had been buried and people were trapped. Nine people had been rescued so far.

Residents had noticed falling rocks shortly before the collapse, state television reported. The landslide struck as 60 residents were being evacuated, it said.

The cause of the collapse was not immediately known. Authorities dispatched dozens of emergency personnel and specially trained rescuers to the scene. Power was also cut in the area after the landslide brought down three electricity pylons, state news agency Xinhua reported.

Landslides are common in China during the rainy summer months.

Last week, a landslide near the city of Longnan in the north-western province of Gansu killed 21 people.
