It's time to talk about Caitlin Clark's shooting.

And to be clear: This isn't to say the Indiana Fever guard is a bad shooter. She very clearly is not.

But the reality is that this season, much like last season, Clark isn't making shots at an efficient enough rate. It's notable enough to have some concern.

These are Clark's shooting stats in her last four games, starting with May 28:

  • 3-12 FG, 2-6 3FG

  • 1-7 FG, 0-2 3FG

  • 6-17 FG, 2-8 3FG

  • 4-14 FG, 2-6 3FG

The Fever lost three of those four games.

On the season, she's not shooting 37.7% from the field and 32.4% from 3-point range.

This is after going 36.7% from the floor and 27.9% beyond the arc in last year's injury-shortened campaign.

As a rookie, Clark shot 41.7% from the field and 34.4% from 3-point land.

She's a career 89.5% shooter from the foul line, so it's not a mechanical thing for Clark, at least not fully.

There's a large element of this that is shot selection. Clark shoots deep 3s, and contested 3s, and stepback 3s -- those are always going to be tougher than just getting some open looks.

Open looks aren't easy because she draws some much defensive attention on every possession, and that attention is what allows Clark, in part, to set up her teammates with her great passing ability.

The Fever can still win even when Clark misses shots, because her willingness to shoot opens up everything else.

But there's still a need for Indiana to get Clark back on more level footing with her shooting numbers. She can't make such a low percentage of her shots and still lead a team to a championship.

Whether the solution is less shooting, or finding better looks, or using Clark in different ways offensively -- the solution is almost irrelevant.

Whatever happens, Clark has to raise those percentages. The Fever are counting on her.
