Spain's Crown Princess Leonor on Friday completed her three-year military training, receiving one of the country's highest military honours from her father, King Felipe VI.

At a ceremony at the Air and Space Academy in San Javier, in the south-eastern region of Murcia, the 20-year-old was awarded the Grand Cross of the Aeronautical Order of Merit. Leonor also received her officer's commission alongside more than 100 fellow graduates.

Queen Letizia and Leonor's younger sister, the 19-year-old Infanta Sofía, attended the ceremony.

The event was overshadowed by the major wildfire in the southern province of Almería, where at least 12 people have been killed and 23 remain missing, according to the latest figures.

The royal household cancelled its traditional graduation reception following the ceremony as a mark of mourning. King Felipe said the decision had been taken in light of the tragedy, and a minute's silence was observed for the victims.

Leonor's military training is intended to prepare her for her future role as commander-in-chief of Spain's armed forces.

The heir to the throne began her military education at the army academy in Zaragoza in August 2023 before completing several months of naval training aboard the training ship Juan Sebastián El Cano.

Since last September, the elder of the king's two daughters has been stationed with the Spanish Air Force in Murcia, where she completed her first solo flight and qualified as a paratrooper.

Leonor is due to begin studying political science at Madrid's public Carlos III University in the 2026-27 academic year.
