The Kingsway Regional High School softball team joined St. Joseph Academy as the area's representatives in the state championships at Ivy Hill Park his week.

St. Joseph Academy (25-3) will play DePaul (19-8) in Wednesday's state Non-Public B final on the campus of Seton Hall University. First pitch is scheduled for 3 p.m.

Kingsway earned the opportunity to play for the state Group 4 championship when senior Reese Whitzell scored on a passed ball in the bottom of the eighth inning for a 3-2 victory over Marlboro in Mondays semifinal round.

Kingsway (21-5) will attempt to win its first state title in 18 years when it plays in Friday’s championship – the final game of the season in the Garden State.

The Dragons will await Tuesday’s winner between Watchung Hills/Morris Knolls for a state championship matchup at Ivy Hill Park on the campus of Seton Hall University. First pitch is slated for 5:45 p.m.

Whitzell had three hits, falling a triple shy of the cycle, in the game. She crunched a high curveball in the first inning for a two-run homer and doubled to start off the eighth frame.

State Group 1 semifinal

Bound Brook 7, Pennsville 3 (8 innings): After battling back with two runs in the bottom of the seventh to force extra innings, the Eagles couldn't pull off another comeback an inning later.

Pennsville finished its season at 18-8. The Eagles were attempting to advance to their first state final since 2008.

Kyle Harris, Avery Watson and Makenzie Widener each had RBIs for Pennsville. Taylor Bass collected three hits and Graillyn Weber chipped in two for the Eagles.

State Group 3 semifinal

Steinert 4, Ocean City 1: The Red Raiders surrendered three runs in the first inning and never recovered during its road loss to the three-time defending state champion.

Ocean City finished its season at 23-7, capturing the program's first sectional title in 37 years.

Down 4-0 in the fourth, the Red Raiders dented the scoreboard when Alex Rothman singled home Leah Catto for the team's lone run.
