A powerful earthquake shook southern Mexico and was also felt in neighbouring Guatemala on Friday, seismologists reported.

According to the US Geological Survey, the 7.3-magnitude quake struck off the Mexican Pacific coast, around 48 kilometres south-west of Aquiles Serdán in the state of Chiapas, at a depth of 15 kilometres.

No fatalities or injuries were initially reported, Arturo Barrientos, head of civil protection in Chiapas, told the N+ broadcaster.

A tsunami warning was issued, Navy Minister Raymundo Morales said.

The Mexican Seismological Institute put the magnitude at 7.4 at a depth of ten kilometres. The quake was followed by several moderate to strong aftershocks, one of which measured 6.1 on the Richter scale, the institute reported.

"There is no major damage," said Morales in the Caribbean town of Tulum during President Claudia Sheinbaum's press conference about the incident.

Authorities urged people to stay away from the coast, warning that sea levels could rise by up to half a metre.

Despite the apparent absence of casualties, work to assess potential damage were continuing. Following the tremor at 08.48 local time (1448 GMT), people in Chiapas took to the streets to seek safety.
