The University of Tennessee first fielded a football team in 1891.

The Vols claim six national championships in program history: 1938, 1940, 1950, 1951, 1967 and 1998. Tennessee has also won 16 conference titles in program history (13 SEC, 2 SoCon, 1 SIAA).

Jersey number No. 60 dates to 1937 for the Vols. Melvin Herring was the first player in program history to wear No. 60 in 1937.

Matt Goodin wore the number during the Vols' 1998 national title season. Other Vols to wear the number during national championship seasons were Stan Himelsbaugh (1967) and Bill Pearman (1950-51).
