Thibaut Courtois agrees new Real Madrid contract

Real Madrid are set to keep Thibaut Courtois at the Santiago Bernabeu after he agreed a contract extension.

The agreement, which has already been signed, will keep Courtois at the club until June 2027.

The deal has been in place since last summer, with Madrid maintaining their long-standing policy of offering one-year contract extensions to players in their mid-thirties.

However, the La Liga giants are expected to reopen discussions with the veteran goalkeeper after this summer’s transfer window over the possibility of a longer stay.

Courtois is one of the first names on the teamsheet whenever he is fit and is still one of the world’s elite goalkeepers despite an injury-hit spell over the past two seasons.

The 34-year-old endured another fitness setback at the World Cup after suffering a groin injury during Belgium’s quarter-final defeat to Spain.

His withdrawal proved costly, with replacement goalkeeper Senne Lammens unable to prevent Spain from progressing after a late error.

Despite those injury concerns, Madrid’s faith in Courtois has never wavered.

Club officials continue to view the Belgian as their undisputed first-choice goalkeeper and an important leader within the dressing room.

Courtois joined Madrid from Chelsea in 2018 and has since enjoyed one of the most successful periods of his career, winning multiple trophies.

Madrid’s decision to extend his contract also provides greater clarity over the club’s goalkeeping hierarchy heading into the new campaign.

Ukraine international Andriy Lunin is expected to remain Courtois’ deputy and will continue competing for opportunities across domestic cup competitions and whenever rotation is required.
