Through his grit and loyalty, Caleb Foster has carved out a special place of affection for Duke fans.

He could have left, like others, when things got difficult. He stuck it out. He could have sat instead of playing against St. John’s, probably before he was ready.

In other words, he could have given up. But he never has.

We don’t know that he’s going to make the NBA, but we wouldn’t bet against him. He brings passion, effort, defense, and leadership, and everyone needs those qualities.

But after watching this video on Wednesday, it’s hard to imagine that the NBA is his ultimate destiny. After watching this, we were thinking Coach Caleb, and wondering, just how valuable is this guy on a daily basis? How much does the staff rely on him as a sort of coach-in-training, a player coach, if you will?

Because after you watch this video, knowing what you know about Foster, if you wouldn’t run through a brick wall for that guy, you shouldn’t be on the court.

He might not want to coach. We saw great potential in Quinn Cook as a coach, but a few weeks ago, when Nolan Smith teased about hiring him, Cook said he didn’t want to coach. Fair enough.

But when you see a man like Caleb Foster teaching, demonstrating, and leading by example, if he wants it, that man has a brilliant future in coaching.
