Michigan scored a big commitment on Wednesday as Cincinnati Princeton cornerback Monsanna Torbert announced for the Wolverines.

For several months, Ohio State was viewed as the leader, but Michigan was able to shift things later in the recruitment with the June 19 official visit weekend providing the boost that got the Wolverines into the lead.

Monsanna Torbert announced Wednesday he is verbally committing to Michigan.

Torbert was a one-time Indiana commit who Notre Dame also pursued following his Hoosier commit.

For Michigan, cornerbacks coach Jernaro Gilford took on a primary recruiting role, but defensive coordinator Jay Hill was also mentioned by Torbert as having a large effect. He referred to Hill as “a defensive guru.” Special teams coach Kerry Coombs, a Cincinnati native who coached high school ball there for a number of years, also had a role in recruiting Torbert.

“Michigan is a defensive powerhouse,” Torbert told Rivals previously. “If you want to be a great defensive player on the next level, Michigan is a great spot.”

A high school quarterback, the 5-foot-11, 170-pound Torbert is Rivals’ No. 10 cornerback nationally. He is also considered the No. 3 rising senior recruit in the state of Ohio.

Torbert finished his junior season with 2,241 all-purpose yards and 30 touchdowns. He also made 40 tackles, intercepted three passes and broke up three passes.

He played a lot of free safety, but projects more to cornerback for Michigan.

The Wolverines now have 20 commitments in their 2027 class.

Torbert joins an outstanding secondary class that has two other four-star recruits at corner in Tavares Harrington of Chicago and Texas native Blake Jenkins. Legacy safety Charles Woodson Jr. and Riverside (California) Notre Dame cornerback Darius Johnson round out the defensive back group.
