Part of the joy of the World Cup being mostly in the U.S. has been getting a sense of the various national fan bases. The people in Boston are still pining for the Scots and want them to come back as soon as possible. The Norwegians charmed everyone with their Viking row and their quirky star, Erling Haaland. The Algerians bonded with the folks in Lawrence, and we got a great glimpse into the immense passion of the Mexicans in Estadio Azteca, as fearsome an arena as anyone could ever visit.

Of course, even the most casual fan knows the signature call of Andrés Cantor (gooooooal!), and many of us have gotten a sense of the British passion for the game that they, after all, invented.

Listening to a British broadcast is something else. First and foremost, you get a combination of accents that, for most Americans, is wild. Second, you get terminology that is totally alien and a cadence that is quite different from what we’re used to. But undeniably it’s a lot of fun to listen to.

Now imagine if a British football announcing crew covered the 1992 Duke-Kentucky classic, calling The Shot by Christian Laettner. Whoever thought of this has a fun imagination.
