Two new forest fires have broken out in Spain, local authorities said on Sunday as the country is experiencing one of its worst wildfire seasons to date.

Strong winds have reignited a forest fire near Lleida, in the autonomous region of Catalonia in north-eastern Spain, and caused it to spread to further areas, the local fire service announced in a post on X.

The fire is said to be burning in ravines with very steep slopes near the village of Senet. Five fire-fighting aircraft have been deployed to battle the flames.

The highest point of the blaze is at an altitude of around 2,300 metres, the Europa Press news agency reported. So far, no one has had to be evacuated.

In the province of Cáceres in the west of the country, a lorry caught fire, with the flames quickly spreading to the surrounding vegetation on Saturday, according to a post by the Guardia Civil police force on X.

More than 800 residents of the villages of Casas de Millán and Grimaldo were evacuated due to the blaze. The fire in the autonomous community of Extremadura, which borders Portugal, is currently classified at the lowest alert level, one.

A Spanish wildfire site lists 43 mostly small wildfires which are currently active across the country, including in Castile and León, where a specialist German wildfire unit has begun operations.

The firefighters arrived at their destination on Saturday after a journey of just under 2,000 kilometres with a convoy of 21 vehicles.

Immediately after their arrival the team set to work, assisting Spanish units in tackling a fire in a nature reserve.
