Ty Simpson Has Quickly Impressed Quentin Lake in Rams’ OTAs
Sam GarciaSat, May 30, 2026·2 min readOrganized team activities (OTAs) began for the Los Angeles Rams this week, allowing returners and coaches to get a glimpse of what the incoming rookies bring to the table.
Safety Quentin Lake, who has been a team captain for the past two seasons, said rookie quarterback Ty Simpson has performed well so far in OTAs.

I think one of the reasons why they liked him so much is he can anticipate things too, which I like. I haven’t gone against him personally, but watching him from afar, he’s getting there. It’s starting to click,” Lake said on “The Arena: Gridiron”.

The Rams have received criticism for using the No. 13 pick to draft Simpson when they already had defending NFL Most Valuable Player, Matthew Stafford. But drafting Simpson will allow the Rams to develop to the rookie quarterback while Stafford finishes out the remainder of his career.
Lake Said Learning From Stafford Will Help Simpson
Lake said Stafford is good at reading defenses, and Simpson will be able to acquire that ability by working alongside Stafford on the Rams.

You know, you want… the quarterback nowadays is kind of a dead man’s art. You don’t have guys like Matthew Stafford or Aaron Rodgers. It’s just different nowadays. Those guys can really pick up, read the defense. They always know what the defense is. It’s rare. But for Ty, having an MVP quarterback like I’ve been saying—it’s gonna help him add that ability,” Lake said.
Stafford signed a one-year, $55 million contract extension with the Rams earlier this month. It is unclear how many more seasons after the 2026 season he plans to play but Los Angeles intends to keep him as their starting quarterback for as long as he is willing to compete.
Therefore, the 2026 season will be a learning year for Simpson. If Stafford retires after the 2026 season, Simpson could take on a starting role for the Rams as early as 2027.
