Adjoa Andoh, actress and International Rescue Committee ambassador who fronted the launch of the fundraising appeal, said: "The generosity of the British public is astonishing!"

"Your kindness is already making an incredible difference to the lives of people in despair through your support of the DEC charities, including the International Rescue Committee, who, with your help, are working tirelessly in the aftermath of the earthquakes."

"Thank you to every person who has donated to the appeal so far - without you we would struggle, with you we can bring hope."
