An advisor to Vladimir Putin has briefed reporters in Moscow on what her termed an "extremely frank" phone call beween the Russian president and US President Donald Trump.
This follows US negotiators Steve Witkoff and Jared Kushner visiting Moscow and Kyiv over the weekend, trying to kickstart the long-stagnant US-brokered effort to set up talks on ending the fighting.
Putin's foreign affairs advisor Yuri Ushakov told reporters that Putin and Trump had "focused on the issue of a settlement in Urkaine," in a discussion which he said lasted around an hour.
He said that Putin had presented an "objective and detailed anlaysis" of the frontline situation to Trump — who in theory should have a wealth of US, NATO and Ukrainian intelligence at his fingertips — and "pointed out what the Americans could realistically do to bring the hostilities to a swift conclusion."
Putin has repeatedly asserted that his troops are advancing across the entire front, with the capture of the entire eastern Donbas region a matter of time. However, progress on the front has been painstakingly slow and with high attrition for his forces in four-and-a-half years of war.
Ushakov said that Trump had called for a speedy end to the fighting. The White House did not immediately provide a readout or account of the purported call, while Trump's social media account appeared to be taking a rare day off after a particularly busy and controversial Monday.

Ukrainian tennis player Elina Svitolina has said that her padel club in Kyiv was hit by Russian bombardment.
"As of today, 776 Ukrainian athletes and sports officials have been killed as a result of Russian aggression. 942 sports facilities across Ukraine have been damaged or completely destroyed. Today, my club, SVITO Padel, became one of them," the world number 9 wrote on Instagram.
The club posted an image of the inside of the building containing fallen debris with what appeared to be a badly damaged roof and upper section of the playing hall.
"We built SVITO with the idea of popularizing sports in Ukraine and deliberately opened the club in Kyiv," the group wrote. "We understood all the risks, but we believed and continue to believe that sport are especially important now: they help you keep going, support your mental health, and provide an opportunity to distract youself and recharge, at least for a little while."
The post said the damage was the result a Russian attack and also the blast wave from hitting a food production plant nearby.
"We're currently assessing the extent of the damage and as soon as we have a complete picture, we'll definitely let you know when we'll be back to work."
Padel is an increasingly popular racquet sport incorporating elements of tennis and squash that originated in Mexico.
Svitolina, 31, was playing in the US Open until this past Saturday, when she was knocked out by 21st seed Anna Kalinskaya from Russia in the third round.

German Defense Minister Boris Pistorius says Berlin will provide Ukraine with additional interceptor missiles from Bundeswehr stocks as Kyiv seeks to bolster its defenses against Russian aerial attacks.

He also urged other Ukraine backers to examine their own inventories and consider similar deliveries.
Pistorius said Germany would also increase supplies of air-to-air missiles and continue providing drones and long-range ammunition to Ukraine.
Separately, Ukrainian Defense Minister Yevhenii Khmara said Kyiv was contracting the supply of around 1,000 missiles for US-designed Patriot systems with help from allies and through a European Union loan.
Khmara said most of those missiles would only be delivered in the coming years and called for more immediate assistance.
