Russia launched a large-scale attack on Ukraine overnight, killing at least eleven people, Ukrainian officials said early on Monday.

Shortly after midnight, air raid sirens and loud explosions were heard in Kiev, while warning sirens sounded across nearly all regions of the country, according to authorities and media reports.

Tymur Tkachenko, head of Kiev's military administration, said at least 10 people had been killed in the capital. Earlier, he wrote that several high-rise buildings had been hit in the attacks. "These are residential buildings. Places where people slept, lived their normal lives," Tkachenko said.

Kiev Mayor Vitali Klitschko said at least 46 people had been injured in the capital, including three children who were hospitalized.

Regional governor Mykola Kalashnyk said a person had died in Bucha, with another 15 people injured.

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky had earlier warned of a heavy Russian attack ahead of the NATO summit in Turkey, citing information from the Ukrainian intelligence services.

"This is typical of [Russian President Vladimir] Putin: right after America's Independence Day and before the NATO Summit in Ankara. Russia wants to bring more evil and kill people," Zelensky posted on Facebook on Sunday.

NATO representatives are due to meet in the Turkish capital on Tuesday and Wednesday.
