Venezuela earthquake death toll rises above 5,000

The number of confirmed fatalities now stands at 5,069, according to the latest figures from authorities in the South American country released on Friday.
More than 16,700 people were also injured, Jorge Rodríguez, president of the National Assembly and brother of interim President Delcy Rodríguez, said on X.
AdvertisementAdvertisementFollowing the devastating magnitude-7.2 and magnitude-7.5 earthquakes on June 24, which struck just 39 seconds apart, the European Union made €20 million ($22.9 million) available in humanitarian aid.
Since the earthquakes, 80 tons of relief supplies have also been flown into Venezuela as part of an airlift.
Separately from the earthquake response, the EU had already earmarked €52 million in humanitarian aid for Venezuela earlier this year because of the country's economic crisis.
