San Antonio Spurs superstar Victor Wembanyama was revealed as the cover athlete for the standard edition of the upcoming NBA 2K27 video game, the company confirmed Wednesday.

Wembanyama is the first center to be on the cover of a 2K basketball game since Shaquille O'Neal was on the cover of the Legend Edition of 2K18. Not only is it Wembanyama's first video game cover of his career, but he is also the first Spurs player to appear on the cover since the game's release in 1999.

Here's what Wembanyama's cover looks like:

The decision to put Wembanyama on the game’s cover has elicited quite the response, particularly from New York Knicks fans, who just watched their team defeat Wembanyama in the NBA Finals.

Of all the responses, Ben Stiller’s resonated most with fans. He responded to the tweet announcing Wembanyama as the cover athlete with a simple “Knicks in five” message.

That was the Knicks’ rallying cry throughout the entire Finals.

In addition to Wembanyama gracing the cover of the standard edition of the game, Indiana Fever star Caitlin Clark was announced as the cover athlete for the deluxe edition of NBA 2K27.

Chicago Bulls legend Derrick Rose will grace the cover of the ultra edition of the game.

Wembanyama has been in the NBA for three years, winning the Rookie of the Year award in 2024 and the NBA's Defensive Player of the Year award in 2026. The 7-foot-4 center has taken the league by storm and, through 181 games, is averaging 23.4 points, 11 rebounds, 3.5 assists, and 3.5 blocks per game.

Wembanyama dropped 50 points against the Washington Wizards in November 2024 and has eight other regular season games with at least 40 points. He dominated the boards against the Denver Nuggets in January 2025 and came down with 23 rebounds. Wembanyama has had four different games with at least 20 rebounds during the regular season. This past season, the Spurs center averaged 25 points per game (13th-best in the league) and 11.5 rebounds (4th-best in the league).

The news comes a month after the Spurs lost to the Knicks in the NBA Finals. San Antonio lost in five games, often blowing late leads to New York.

While Wembanyama's performance in the Finals was impressive, he drew criticism for how he handled the loss.

Despite that, Wembanyama is still among the biggest and most talented players in the game. He's a prime selection for the honor, and will undoubtedly be ranked as one of the top players in NBA 2K27 when the game releases in September.

Clark, similarly, is also in her third season as a pro. One of the biggest names in the WNBA, Clark is in the midst of — by some measures — her finest season so far. Through 22 games, her 20.7 points per game stands as a career-high.

Rose, a former No. 1 overall pick by the Bulls, is a franchise legend, one whose number was retired by the franchise in January. Injuries disrupted what some believe would have been a Hall of Fame career by Rose, who was the Rookie of the Year and an MVP before an ACL injury.
