NATO will "not be intimidated" by Russia, German Foreign Minister Johann Wadephul said on Tuesday, after the Western alliance shot down a drone over Lithuanian airspace.

Speaking in Geneva on a visit to the United Nations, Wadephul said "we are once again witnessing hostility from the Russian side towards NATO allies."

"It demonstrates once again what Russia is trying to do: it is trying to divide us and unsettle us, and it must not be allowed to succeed in either," he added.

NATO has shown that it is capable of repelling such attacks, the minister said. "We will not be intimidated."

The comments came after an Italian jet shot down a drone over Lithuania on Monday night. There were no reports of damage or injuries, but debris is being investigated.

The NATO sortie was coordinated at the Combined Air Operations Centre in Germany's Uedem, the Allied Air Command said.
