ROUND ROCK — There's no longer a "but" attached to New Home baseball.

The Leopards have been the standard in Region I, reaching the state tournament five times over the previous seven seasons.

But they haven't won a state championship.

The 2026 squad will always be remembered for striking down that phrase.

New Home exorcised its bittersweet demons with a convincing 7-2 win over Iola in the Class 2A Division I title game Thursday at Dell Diamond. Now Leopards coach Brady Webb won't have to worry about the "what if" of so many close calls over the years.

New Home's Ryder Starkey lifts the team's trophy after a win over Iola in the Class 2A Division I baseball state championship Thursday, June 4, 2026, at Dell Diamond in Round Rock.

There were times he wondered if he'd ever reach the mountaintop.

"I definitely don't take for granted that it's not easy to get here," Webb said. "It's not easy to get to a regional final, state semifinal. It's not easy to win the thing. Some things need to go your way. But it helps having really talented ball players that work their tail ends off."

The Leopards (30-8) showed as much. The team jumped on Iola with five runs on four hits in the opening frame and went up 7-1 through two innings. Bransen Beckham, the game's MVP, started the party with a two-run double. He finished 3-for-3 with four RBIs.

It was a therapeutic start that seemed to wash away the disappointment of a year ago. New Home managed one hit in a 6-1 loss to Centerville in the 2025 championship.

It was also a bit stunning to come off Bulldogs pitcher Brody Vaughn. Iola's senior ace entered 15-0 and had allowed five runs the entire postseason.

"Everybody kept saying if we get three or four runs, it feels like that's going to be enough," Webb said. "Honestly, I did feel that way, just unsure if we were gonna be able to scratch three or four against him. … Getting a five-spot in the first inning was huge, and then just making sure we're pitching, hitting spots, playing defense."

Tucker Cotton and Avin Madrid took care of that aspect. The duo combined to allow four hits — none for extra bases. Madrid threw three scoreless innings to finish the job.

"The guys in front of me, they're the ones who got on," Beckham said. "I just did my part by knocking them in. I give credit to the guys in front of me and credit to Tucker and Avin for throwing one heck of a game on the bump."

Beckham said the victory completed a "revenge tour" that started after the loss to Centerville. For Webb, the heartbreak began long before. Thursday marked the program's third title game, to go with three other exits in the state semifinals.

New Home baseball coach Brady Webb claps in the Class 2A Division I state championship against Iola on Thursday, June 4, 2026, at Dell Diamond in Round Rock.

He finally experienced a joy he compared to the moment he got engaged and the birth of his children.

"It's just something that you work towards," Webb said. "Since I started coaching, this is what everybody wants to do. I'm so proud of all of our teams that haven't done this, but I'm proud of our boys for doing what they needed to do to finish the job here. This is what they've been preparing for as soon as we started back in January. This was the goal. This was the mindset.

"Even when we were back home at the Zant (Field), we're thinking about Dell. We're putting our mind here, and we're putting pressure on ourselves like it's a state championship game."

Webb couldn't help but attribute the breakthrough to his four seniors: Madrid, Hunter Burrell, Jair Johnson and Ryder Starkey. Burrell and Starkey received all-state tournament honors, along with Beckham and Cotton. The latter two will return as seniors next season.

So, while Webb can exhale knowing the ultimate plaque will head to the trophy case, he's ready to pursue more for the collection.

"On the bus ride home, my mind starts going towards next year immediately," Webb said. "And I'm excited about next year. … It does feel like a little bit of weight off, but I feel like I want to go get another one now, find a way to get No. 2."
