The Big Ten has been expanding a lot recently, but it’s hard not to get the integral, prestigious programs that defined the conference for so many years. Michigan is a storied school that has been among the standard in college football for as long as anyone can remember. Last year was a bit of a down year for a team that is constantly posting double-digit wins and emerging victorious in Bowl Games. With a new coach and a fresh start, they are hoping they can make a triumphant return to prominence this season.

Here is a quick look at the Michigan Wolverines heading into the 2026 season.

  • Bowl result: Lost Citrus Bowl to Texas, 41-27

Last year was a major disappointment for Michigan after going into the season with playoff aspirations. They finally landed a top-notch quarterback in five-star Bryce Underwood, which obviously elevated expectations, but the team was unable to live up to them. They struggled to find an ideal blend between the running and passing game that ultimately made the offense underwhelming. The Wolverines will enter 2026 with a new coach to lead the charge and help develop Underwood, hoping that the structural adjustments they made will lead to more success on the field.

Head coach: Kyle Whittingham, 1st season

Longtime Utah coach Kyle Whittingham will be leading the charge for the Blue and Gold for the first time this season after 22 years with the Utes. His Utah teams typically overachieved, capturing eight double-digit win seasons for a program that only had one in its history prior to his arrival. With more resources and exposure at Michigan, it’s fair to expect that he will bring the team back to prosperity. A successful stint with the Wolverines could shoot Whittingham up the all-time coaching wins list and carve and even greater legacy for him.

Offensive player to know: Bryce Underwood, Quarterback

There were massive expectations placed on the shoulders of 18-year-old, five-star quarterback Bryce Underwood ahead of the 2025 season. The 6-4, 228-pound kid from Detroit has a rocket arm to go along with tremendous athletic ability, but he just wasn’t able to put it all together last year. The offensive game plan typically seemed to focus on keeping the ball out of Underwood’s hands and limiting his attempts as a passer. He’s still raw because of how young he is, so he has to work on his accuracy and the consistency in his mechanics. It’s hard to imagine a young man with this many physical gifts being unable to succeed, and now Whittingham will be tasked with making sure he squeezes everything he can out of Underwood.

Defensive player to know: John Henry Daley, Edge rusher

Michigan is known for having incredible defenses, and this year should be no different with the acquisition of John Henry Daley. The game-wrecking defensive end transferred from Utah after a 2025 season where he tallied 11.5 sacks and 17.5 tackles for loss. The Wolverines have produced some great defensive linemen in their history, including Detroit Lions star Aidan Hutchinson and former Philadelphia Eagles legend Brandon Graham, so they hope Henry Daley follows in their footsteps. He’ll face much better competition, but the upgraded talent around him could help him be even more productive this season.

Yes, the Nittany Lions will travel to The Big House this year to face Michigan on Oct. 17. The time of the game hasn’t been announced at this time, but it could potentially be a prime-time matchup if both teams are rolling around the time they meet.

Michigan leads the all-time series with Penn State, and has won the last three meetings dating back to 2021. Penn State's last win in Michigan Stadium came during the 2020 season Penn State has won just four games in Ann Arbor since joining the Big Ten in 1993. Michigan Stadium has historically been a house of horrors for the Nittany Lions.
