๐ World Cup Moments: The Miracle of Bern
To get a sense of just how miraculous the World Cup final of 1954 in Bern was between Hungary and West Germany, you only need to look at the statistics.
Between 1950 and 1956, the Hungary side gained a reputation as the world's best side and were nicknamed the Magical Magyars for their devastating displays, spearheaded by star man Ferenc Puskรกs.

That defeat came in the 1954 World Cup final.
And it was even more shocking because of events at that tournament and not just Hungary's performances either side of it.
The nations had met earlier in the competition during the group phase and West Germany were easily thrashed 8-3.
Prior to the game, FIFA reportedly called on each of the 40 assembled media members for a prediction and just one journalist was brave (or foolish) enough to call a German victory.

Then came one of football's most incredible comebacks. Max Morlock slid in to pull one back within minutes before the inspirational Fritz Walter set up Helmut Rahn to equalise before he added his second for a stunning winner with six minutes remaining.
All kinds of myths have surrounded the astonishing upset.
Played amid a heavy downpour, some claim the wet conditions were much more suitable to the Germans who had been supplied with special Adidas boots with specific studs which would withstand any problems on the pitch.

Nonetheless, Germany's Heroes of Bern were born.
It was the first of four World Cup triumphs. Hungary never came as close to glory again and to this day, have yet to lift football's ultimate prize.
