Yankees drop 7th straight: ‘An absolutely awful stretch of baseball’

The Yankees had a golden opportunity to snap their 6-game losing streak and end their series with the Detroit Tigers with a win.

Instead, they failed to get a clutch hit in the bottom of the 10th inning and their defense imploded once again in the top of the 11th en route to a 6-2 loss, their seventh straight defeat.

It is their longest losing streak since they dropped nine in a row in 2023.

“The Yankees lose their 7th straight game, an absolutely awful stretch of baseball by the Yankees as they continue to lose, their defense continues to be porous and [they are] not getting the hits when they need them,” Michael Kay said on the YES Network.

Added Paul O’Neill: “The offense continues to struggle day after day, getting the big hit, getting the job done when you need it. They had big opportunities in the 10th to win, didn’t happen.”

After trailing 2-0 entering the bottom of the ninth, the Yankees tied it at 2-2 when Jazz Chisholm stole second base, third base and home during a remarkable stretch.

Anthony Volpe was then thrown out at second base for the second out to stifle the offensive threat.

In the home 10th, the Yankees had runners on the corners with a chance to finally get a win, but both Oswaldo Cabrera and Ali Sanchez struck out swinging to end the threat.

Manager Aaron Boone was asked why he didn’t pinch hit Paul Goldschmidt for Cabrera there.

“Because confidence that Cabrera can touch the ball, too,” he said.

Disaster struck in the top of the 11th when Camilo Doval walked Spencer Torkelson with the bases loaded to make it 3-2 for Detroit.

Things unraveled from there when Zach McKinstry singled to right with the bases loaded, scoring Riley Greene to make it 4-2. Caballero’s throw home was not in time to get Hao-Yu Lee and Sanchez then threw the ball over the head of Volpe at second base, allowing Torkelson to score for a 6-2 lead.

Doval has now allowed six game-tying or go-ahead runs in the eighth inning or later this season, per the YES Network.

The Yankees have allowed 23 unearned runs in their last 12 games after allowing 22 in their first 74 games.

The lone bright spot for the Yankees was Will Warren pitching 5 1/3 innings and striking out seven while allowing two earned runs.

Still, the ending was a disaster.

“It’s been a terrible week for us, there’s no way of sugar coating it, and we’re capable of way more, obviously” Aaron Boone told reporters.

“Look, you’re gonna have stretches where it’s tough, where you’re missing some guys but this was a really difficult week for us offensively and couple that with not playing clean enough and taking care of the ball well enough, that’s what you get.

“You get an awful week...There’s no waiting, we gotta go. Hopefully we can regroup on this off day and start playing better baseball this weekend.”
