The Golden State Warriors took somewhat of a gamble with their 11th-overall pick in the NBA Draft, Yaxel Lendeborg from the University of Michigan, but it was a gamble aimed both at securing their future and supporting their present.

Lendeborg was one of the older players available early in the draft at 24-years-old after a five year college career between both junior college and the NCAA, but selecting a player with that much experience was very much the plan on the Warriors' part.

The aim is to have Lendeborg ready to play on an NBA court right away without needing much time devoted to development or worse-yet for the Warriors' plans, a stint in the G-League to figure things out. Fellow young star Brandin Podzeimski said as much before the draft, that Golden State needed someone who could hit the ground running.

Lendeborg's Encouraging Words

Based on everything that Lendeborg did during Summer League, including leading the Warriors to a Summer League championship and winning Summer League MVP, and everything he's said during his media availabilities since the moment he was drafted, Lendeborg is exhibiting all the qualities, including readiness and maturity, that they need out of him.

With maturity also comes humility and self-awareness, two things that Lendeborg exhibited when he was asked why he played the entire Summer League despite other first-round picks sitting out the final games.

“I got to continue to prove myself. I still don’t think I’m there as far as like, as best as I can be or as confident as I can be. So Ima go out there every day and try to play as much as I can," Lendeborg said (via jinthirty on X). "And I got drafted to play basketball. I didn’t get drafted to watch. So I’m going to try my best to stay on the floor as long as I can.”

No Stranger to Hard Work

Playing basketball as opposed to watching basketball is the mentality that the Warriors had when drafting Lendeborg distilled to it's exact components.

Lendeborg also already knows what it's like to have to prove himself in his career. He played his first two seasons for Arizona Western College, a junior college, before working his way up to the University of Alabama at Birmingham for another two seasons and finally landing at Michigan in his fifth year, leading the Wolverines to a NCAA championship and winning 2026 Big Ten Player of the Year.

He's had to prove himself ever step of the way and knows as well as anyone else what it's going to take for him to take the next step as a player.

He's no stranger to hard work and from the looks of it, that hard work is going to take him seamlessly into the NBA.
